Meet Katie (DeBoy) Christopher! Katie attended St. Mary, St. Boniface, and Central Catholic. She graduated from Central Catholic in 2010. While at CC, she participated in cross country and track. After graduating, Katie went on to attend Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. While there she was a four-year member of the cross country and track team. In 2014, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
Katie’s first job after graduation was teaching second and third grade at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Fowler, Indiana. After one year, she was hired on at St. Mary Cathedral School to teach third grade. Katie is also the varsity cross country and track assistant coach at Central Catholic.
In 2015, Katie married Cody Christopher, a 2011 Central Catholic grad. Katie and Cody have two children: Leo, a son, who is two years old and Emerson, a daughter, who was born in June 2018.
How did your education at LCSS prepare you for college, your career, and life after high school?
LCSS helped prepare me for college by providing rigorous classes that equipped me academically. Learning to balance work, academics, and athletics in high school was a big plus going into college where I would have to find a balance between two practices a day, classes, and student teaching. The most valuable part of my LCSS education was being part of and immersed in a community that positively reinforced the core faith values that my parents instilled in my daily life. During college and now in my adult life, I appreciate the importance of having these strong values that became an intrinsic part of who I am. Now that I work in the LCSS community, I try to give to my students what my teachers gave to me - a safe, fun, and productive learning environment where you can learn and grow to be the person God intended you to be.
What did you like most about your experience at LCSS?
There are so many experiences to be grateful for when attending LCSS. In my experience, the best part of LCSS is that it becomes your family. The summer before my freshman year at Central Catholic, my brother was killed by an impaired driver. I will never forget the response from the entire LCSS community. They were there to support me and my family whether it was by providing meals, donating things, or in prayer. Their support was evident at the funeral home where people waited for hours just to tell us they were sorry for our loss. The church was overflowing with people from the LCSS community for the funeral. The amount of love and support we got during that time was unbelievable. Even today, I still feel as if the LCSS community is my family.
What is your favorite memory from your years at LCSS?
My favorite memories while being at LCSS are times spent with my teammates. We had so much fun at practice and outside of practice. Whether we were trying to convince coach to let us go on a smoothie run, planning a weekly team dinner, or just spending time together. One summer, the cross country team went to team camp for a week in southern Indiana. We had a blast. Going to Washington, D.C. for March for Life and National History Day are also memories I hold dearly and will never forget.
