August 13, 2014. A day that will live in…….

What a great start to the school year.  What a great new beginning at Central Catholic.  Our 1:1 learning initiative is in full swing at CC and it’s thanks in part to a lot of hard work from several different people.  I want to spend some time highlighting some of the things that happened at our rollout, and then thank several different people.

On August 13, 2014, Central Catholic made a huge leap in providing the best technology for her students.  Every student received a MacBook Air along with 3 hours of training provided by the Student Technology Leadership Team.

Any time your roll out that amount of technology, you are bound to run into a few minor glitches.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers on the day, because it was a huge success! We are in our second week of 1:1 learning at CC, and it couldn’t be going smoother.  It is so great to walk through the halls of CC, look into a classroom, and see students utilizing the technology in relevant ways.

You can walk into Mr. O’Keefe’s Digital Design class, where students now have access to the entire Adobe Creative Suite to learn a craft that can lead to a future career, and see some of the beautiful work that our students are creating.

Pass by Catie Rose Beardmore’s classroom and you are bound to hear a student ask a question.  Instead of just answering it, Ms. Beardmore has students go research the question and discuss their thoughts on it’s possible answer.

Move over into Mr. Vickman’s class where Friday has been turned into a 21st century learning day.  20% time has taken over, and you will find students developing critical thinking skills that they would have never had an opportunity to develop otherwise.

Finally, move into Mrs. Shuey’s classroom where you can find students completing their first college application letters and getting immediate feedback on their writing.

I want to take some time to thank a few people who have made this initiative such a huge success.

Dr. Joseph Brettnacher – Without your leadership and giving of your time last school year to the preparation of our 1:1 launch, we wouldn’t be where we are today, thank you.

Mr. Neil Wagner and Mrs. Melissa Robertson – Thank you for your time in planning for the logistics of the 13th and for your continued support of the program.  It makes all of the difference in the world.

Mrs. Kim Granlund – Without the time that you have given to helping organize and track all of our students purchases for the program, I would still be working late nights.  I truly appreciate you!

Mr. David Shelby – Thank you for your tireless work on our budget.  Nobody wants to stare at spreadsheets all day long, but you do it with fervor.

Mr. Doug Granlund, Mr. Don Corcoran, and Mr. Pete Fletcher – Thank you for giving an evening of your time this summer to install projectors at CC.  It’s a blessing to have people who give of their time so willingly.

Mr. Steve Eddy – You have tirelessly worked to learn a new system, and worked long hours with a guy who struggles from time to time with delegation.  Thank you for your continued support to Central Catholic.  We wouldn’t be where we are today without your work.

Mr. David Cramer – Thank you for all of the time you donate to the schools.  Late nights are never easy, and I know it was tough walking out of the building a few times at 2 AM.  Our network and infrastructure is sound because you have guided us in the right direction.

Mr. Brian Sorgenfrei – The list would be too long to thank you for individual things that you have helped us with this summer.  All I can say is thank you.  You do more than anyone can imagine.

Mr. Eric Davis – Thank you for pushing us forward with the strategic plan.  I wish everyone could see what you do behind the scenes and all of the iterations of this project that you helped push us through.  LCSS is lucky to have such a great leader.

The Student Technology Leadership Team – What an amazing day we had on the 13th.  Spending a week with all of you this summer to prepare for that day was a great experience for me.  You all did an amazing job.  Thank you!

The Faculty and Staff of Central Catholic High School – You are all amazing.  Your patience and help through this whole process has been incredible.  While all of the people above are important to our schools, without you, we would have no school.  You are what make our building and our education great.  Thank you.

I know that I have probably forgotten a few people in the process of writing this letter.  I hope you can understand that this is no small task and that it something like this can never be done with only a few people.

Have a blessed week!

  1. Thanks, Joe, for your tireless efforts in getting the 1:1 program underway, and thanks as well to all those mentioned in your blog who were crucial to making it all possible. I hope the students have some appreciation of the MANY people who have helped push this initiative along and help make it a reality, and of the time and effort that has been necessary for their benefit. Thanks again!
