Mrs. Reed Named 2010 Golden Apple Award Winner!
The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce has named Central Catholic Art and Digital Graphics teacher, Mrs. Candy Reed, a 2010 Golden Apple Award winner. The Chamber of Commerce Selection Committee recognized Mrs. Reed at a school assembly presenting her with a $1,000 check, flowers and balloons. She will be honored by the community at the Golden Apple Awards dinner set for April 19 at the Best Western.
Mrs. Reed has been educating Central Catholic students since 1995 when she began teaching sophomore Religion, the Old Testament and New Testament, and Computer Graphics. Many alumni also remember her for the profound discussions they had during their junior Religion Morality and Social Justice classes with her. Since 2002, Mrs. Reed has taught high school Art. She currently teaches nine Art and Digital Graphics courses, which means sometimes she has students taking two different courses in the same period.

Her dedication to her students is evident in all of the student extracurriculars she has taken on. She has served as the advisor to the Lance Yearbook, Art Club, Student Council and was the Class advisor for many classes. She was the Head Coach for the CC Academic Super Teams and was instrumental in bringing back the SEARCH retreat program to Central Catholic.
Mrs. Reed has received numerous recognitions herself; however, she says, “The awards dearest to my heart are the ones that my students win such as the National Finalist for the Doodle 4 Google and the Tri Kappa New Artist Show…the most wonderful part of my career is seeing what my students do in their lives and hearing from them from around the country.”
“The selection of our Golden Apple Award Winners is a rigorous process,” says Joy Page, Chamber of Commerce Program Manager. After accepting the nomination, teachers must submit a lengthy bio with references from parents, colleagues and students. They are visited three times for classroom observation and are then interviewed by a panel of judges. Finally, they are asked to write a 500 word essay on the Characteristics of a Professional Teacher using the six traits of writing. Next year, K-5 elementary teachers will be recognized. Parents, current and past students, and peers are encouraged to nominate a teacher who has made a positive impact on the lives of their students.
Messages of congratulations may be emailed to Mrs. Reed at reed@lcss.org or mailed to Central Catholic HS, 2410 S. 9th St., Lafayette, IN 47909.
