Lafayette Central Catholic 2009 State Champion Baseball Team Wins National Honor

Sports Faith International, a media initiative to showcase the connection between sports and faith is pleased to announce that the 2009 Lafayette Central Catholic Baseball State Champions have been selected as the #1 Catholic School Male Team in the nation for 2009/2010. The top female team is the St. Mary High School (Stockton, California) Girls Basketball Team. St. Mary H.S. is currently rated #1 in the nation by USA Today.
Sports Faith International is a combined effort of Catholic Athletes for Christ, Relevant Radio, Catholic Knights, and the United States Council of Serra International. Each year professional and amateur athletes, coaches and teams are recognized for balancing their athletic accomplishments and spiritual growth. The professionals to be honored this year are Tom Monaghan, former owner of Domino’s Pizza and the Detroit Tigers; Bill Bidwell, owner of the NFL Arizona Cardinals; and former Chicago Bears fullback, Brian Piccolo, whose award will be accepted posthumously by his wife. This year’s award ceremony will be held on February 21, 2010 at Halas Hall, headquarters of the Chicago Bears in Lake Forest, Illinois. Presentations will be made by Mr. Patrick McCaskey – President of the Chicago Bears and the Chairman of Sports Faith International. br />
The team winners were selected based on four factors:
• Athletic achievement
• Team academic achievements
• Community action projects
• Team spirituality
Lafayette Central Catholic, coached by the 2009 Indiana Coach of the Year Tim Bordenet, won the state title for the third time in six years. The Knights finished the 2009 season with a 28-4 overall record and outscored all tournament opponents by a 60-6 margin. Team captain, Dru Anthrop, was recognized as the Class 1A L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award winner following the state championship contest. Team members participated in a variety of community service projects and were very active in school retreats and church sponsored organizations.
