I was walking down the main CC senior high hallway in September and noticed students giving the sign of the cross as they passed the opening that used to lead outside when I went to school here. Fortunately, in the spring of 2009 this part of the building was converted into what I believe is the most beautiful space at Central Catholic: the St. Joseph Chapel. The building was made possible through the generosity of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Gurnick and many donors who contributed to the furnishings that create this special place of worship.
As we continue through the liturgical season of Advent, I do not think we can overlook the importance of this small gesture by high school students or the beautiful church buildings in our children’s daily lives. The importance of this season is to focus on the coming of our Lord. Every week students in the Lafayette Catholic School System pray before, during and after school, attend mass, receive a sacrament, are on a retreat or preparing for a retreat, in religion class, or just walking down the hallway giving the sign of the cross. As the sign in the CC hallway reads, “Jesus is in here!” I agree, he is in our Chapels, classrooms, hallways and daily lives of our children. If a group of 15-18 year kids can all walk down a busy hall and ‘give him some love’ for a quick moment without worrying about being cool or someone making fun of them, I have to think this is the importance of a Catholic school education. We are building true servant leaders who align closely with the religious virtues of the Catholic faith and are ready to serve when they leave.
‘Jesus is in here’ and I would encourage you to give ‘Give Him some Love’ as we prepare for his coming this advent season. If you have not seen the St. Joseph’s Chapel at Central Catholic Jr./Sr. High School, please ‘pass by’ and ‘say hello’. It is an impressive place and a constant reminder to our students that Jesus is always near. We do not care if your kids are only in elementary school or if you are only in town for the holidays to visit with family, please stop by for a visit. It is a very exciting time in the Lafayette Catholic School System and we want to share our story with you. Never hesitate to contact our office. We are here to serve you and the entire Catholic school community.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as you celebrate the coming of Christ and liturgical season of Advent.
